Gov. Minner Welcomes Wal-Mart Regional Distribution Center to Smyrna

New center adds 1,000 employees to Delaware’s workforce

Smyrna – Governor Ruth Ann Minner joined representatives from Wal-Mart Stores Inc. today to welcome them to the new Wal-Mart regional distribution center in Smyrna. The Wal-Mart regional distribution center will add 1,000 jobs to Delaware’s workforce.

“There will be 1,000 jobs at this facility and those 1,000 jobs will have an economic impact on our state of more than $40 million dollars a year,” Gov. Minner said. “This facility will have a long-term and positive impact on Delaware, on Kent County, on Smyrna and on the Smyrna School District.”

The 1.2 million square-foot facility is located in the Smyrna Business Park, one mile west of U.S. 13.

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., America’s largest retailer, will use the new Smyrna distribution center to stock all its retail locations within a 200-mile radius. The center represents a capital investment of approximately $50 million by Wal-Mart.

“We are proud to open this state-of-the-art distribution facility in Smyrna which not only brings new jobs and revenue to Delaware, but allows us to become an integral part of the Smyrna community,” said Rollin Ford, Wal-Mart’s executive vice-president of logistics and global supply chain. “We will be a good corporate citizen and look forward to a strong partnership with the people of Smyrna.”

The state, in a collaborative effort with Smyrna officials, has worked with Wal-Mart since December 2000 to attract the distribution center to its current site.

“The Wal-Mart Distribution Center will make a significant contribution to Smyrna’s economy,” said Smyrna Mayor Mark G. Schaeffer. “It is not just job creation. The Wal-Mart Distribution Center will help support our school district. It will act as a springboard in attracting new businesses, and it will enhance our tax base.”

“Wal-Mart’s decision to choose Smyrna as the site for its new distribution center fulfills an economic development goal to create sustainable wage jobs in Kent County,” said Delaware Economic Development Office Director Judy McKinney-Cherry.

In addition to the new distribution center, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., currently operates three discount stores, four Supercenters and one SAM’S CLUB, employing more than 3,225 associates in Delaware. Last year, Wal-Mart and its associates raised and donated an estimated $431,000 for charitable causes in the state of Delaware.

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. operates Wal-Mart Stores, Supercenters, Neighborhood Markets and SAM’S CLUBS in all fifty states. Last year, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., contributed more than $140 million to support communities and local non-profit organizations. Customers and associates raised an additional $70 million at stores and clubs.
