Current E-Commerce Implementation
As a typical SME in Hong Kong, Transland did not have much resources and technical knowledge of using IT. The company owner took his own initiatives to attend free seminars available from the market and observe competitors' moves and direction. It was clear in his mind that if the company's infrastructure cannot support a transparent information network and allow their customers to trace their goods delivery status anytime, anywhere, they cannot satisfy customer demands and will be put out of business.
Two years ago, Transland employed two in-house IT staff and started their own implementation. They proved that the development and maintenance cost were much lower with their self-developed software. The current platform is run on Microsoft Access for short-term implementation purpose through which internal staff can access the information via Graphic User Interfaces or Access SQL Statement Interfaces. Customer can also access the information via the Web interface anytime, anywhere. They regard User Interface Efficiency as an important successful implementation factor for productivity enhancement. In the long run, they will build the back end warehouse management system and link up with the current two systems.
The company launched its website last year and part of its development work was out-sourced to a software vendor. To raise employees' acceptance of e-commerce, the company adopted a top-down approach in its implementation. The owner take the initiative to learn and use the tools and provide financial resources to train their staff to understand the benefits of e-commerce and build up their confidence and skill sets in using IT. This way, resistance to use the new system was reduced.
Transland plans to build the backend warehouse management system and link up all operating hubs in Hong Kong and Mainland China. It will be a more sophisticated system involving a lot of operating procedures and manpower.
Transland's vision is to build the group's information transparency along with the physical goods flow in the next couple of years. This knowledge-driven business approach will enhance the company's competitive advantage and thus enable Transland to expand and grow with the customers. In addition to the fundamental goods movement services, it enables Transland to provide the necessary quality service to customers through accurate information, lower information access cost, better operation predictability and customer response .
