Preserving Our Past

Missourians have many reasons to be proud of our state’s exceptional role in history. Missouri, of course, was central to Lewis and Clark’s expedition, hosted the famous 1904 World’s Fair, and was home to President Harry S. Truman. Our state capitol hosts the Hall of Famous Missourians that shows the faces and tells the stories of Missourians whose outstanding gifts and accomplishments have made Missouri proud.
The stories of these great Missourians, and the stories of so many others, are told throughout the state, and by the buildings and sites that preserve the stories. Many of our historic sites, homes, churches, mills and buildings are beautifully maintained and restored. Some of these treasures, however, are in disrepair because they have been vacated or outlived their original purpose. Unfortunately, the difference between rehabilitation and demolition is sometimes just a matter of cost.
Many historic buildings do not stand alone but are part of a deteriorating downtown area or a once-prosperous main street. Buildings with rich histories are now in sections of cities and towns that benefit little from the original beauty and history of the structures. Missouri is not alone in this regard, as other states face similar challenges as they seek to preserve their own heritage and history.
In March I was asked by President Bush to join the National Advisory Council on Historic Preservation. The federal agency was established in 1966 to advise the President and Congress on historic preservation policies and make recommendations for protecting the country’s heritage. I recently joined with members of the council to discuss historic preservation policies for the United States and was reminded of the importance of preserving our nation’s history for the benefit of this and future generations. I was also reminded of the important and aggressive steps we have taken to preserve history right here in Missouri.
I created the Downtown Revitalization and Economic Assistance for Missouri Initiative, DREAM, to help downtown areas throughout Missouri re-establish a sense of place and cultural heritage while also attracting private investment and creating new jobs.
The DREAM Initiative will ensure that our historic treasures are not overlooked. Cape Girardeau, Excelsior Springs, Hannibal, Hermann, Kennett, Neosho, St. Joseph, Sedalia, Washington, and West Plains were selected as the first annual DREAM communities and I look forward to seeing their downtowns transformed over the next few years.
Historic preservation is about respecting our past and securing a legacy for future generations. As Thomas Jefferson once remarked, “[I am] too old to plant trees for my own gratification I shall do it for posterity.” Our historic sites, buildings, documents and grounds help tell the story of our state and help us build on the triumphs and accomplishments of those who have gone before us. We owe it to our posterity to preserve the treasures we have inherited.
