President Hu Jintao of China to Visit Seattle
President Hu Jintao of the People's Republic of China, plans to visit Seattle in April on his way to his first official White House visit in Washington, D.C. President Hu was originally scheduled to visit in September 2005, but his trip was postponed as a result of Hurricane Katrina. His visit will likely include a trip to Boeing and Microsoft, in addition to a major policy speech and a dinner hosted by Governor Christine Gregoire. President Hu's stop in Seattle points to the close ties between China and Washington State. In fact, in 1979 the Port of Seattle was the destination of the first Chinese ship to arrive in the United States following normalization of relations with China. Currently, China is Washington State's third-largest trading partner, with more than $20 billion in two-way trade, and both the Port of Seattle and the Port of Tacoma are major logistics gateways for China into the U.S.
