OSHA Aligns with International Warehouse Logistics Association
Alliance will focus on materials handling, forklift safety and hazard communication
WASHINGTON -- Working with owners and operators in the warehousing industry to provide information, guidance and access to training resources is the foundation of OSHA's newest national Alliance, formalized today in Washington.
The International Warehouse Logistics Association (IWLA) joined with OSHA to improve worker safety and health in the areas of forklift operations, materials handling, and hazard communication and chemical safety.
"The Alliance we're signing today will enhance the safety and health of thousands of workers employed in the warehouse logistics industry," said OSHA Administrator John Henshaw. "Together with our IWLA partners, we'll be able to provide valuable information and training resources on issues directly related to the warehouse industry, and I'm particularly pleased we'll be focusing on forklift safety and youth workers."
Added Joel R. Hoiland, IWLA President and Chief Executive Officer: "I'm pleased to enter into this important Alliance with OSHA on behalf of the more than 500 warehouse and logistics companies IWLA represents. IWLA has always recognized the importance of safer and more healthful workplaces, devoting a great deal of time and resources to educating our members in this regard. Working in conjunction with OSHA, we hope to expand these efforts."
A key feature of the Alliance is to develop and make available training and education programs on material handling, forklift safety, hazard communication and other health and safety issues targeted to the public warehouse industry.
Particular attention will be paid to increasing hard-to-reach and youth workers' access to safety and health information and training resources, including the development of materials in Spanish through community-based organizations.
OSHA and IWLA will develop safety and health assistance tools for the industry, including a safety and health inspection checklist for warehouse managers and work together to develop a web-based training tool ("e-Tool") for the industry.
Information will be disseminated through print and electronic media, including newsletters and links from OSHA and IWLA websites. Some of that information will include case studies illustrating the business value of safety and health programs such as warehouse material handling and forklift safety.
Representatives of OSHA and IWLA will also participate in forums, roundtable discussions, or stakeholder meetings on the specific issues addressed in the Alliance.
Based in Des Plaines, IL, IWLA represents third-party warehousing based logistics firms, warehouse/logistics divisions of industry firms, and warehouse logistics professionals around the world, and serves to foster and promote the growth and success of public and contract warehousing and related logistics services.
OSHA is dedicated to assuring worker safety and health. Safety and health add value to business, the workplace and life. For more information, visit www.osha.gov.
