GOVERNOR RENDELL ANNOUNCES GRANTS TO STRENGTHEN PENNSYLVANIA BUSINESSES, SUPPORT JOB GROWTH

HARRISBURG — Governor Edward G. Rendell today announced the first round of grants to Pennsylvania employers to help them form strategic partnerships to create new jobs. Governor Rendell’s Job Ready PA workforce development initiative provides $91 million to support workforce development.

“We want to help Pennsylvania employers create new jobs and new opportunities for our hard-working men and women,” Governor Rendell said. “Bringing employers together to form strategic partnerships will not only create new jobs, but also foster innovation and give Pennsylvania a competitive advantage in global markets.”

The first round of grants, totaling $462,285, is being made to businesses in the health care; building and construction; transportation and logistics; advanced materials and diversified manufacturing; and bio-medical industries – high-growth industries that have the greatest potential to create new jobs.

“These grants will bring employers with common interests together,” Governor Rendell said. “Getting businesses to work together will make them stronger and thus, make Pennsylvania stronger.”

A total of $5 million of Governor Rendell’s Job Ready PA funding is for the development of industry partnerships: employers, workers and workers’ representatives from vital industries cooperating to improve their collective competitive position in the larger marketplace.

Among other things, industry partnerships can identify training needs and skill gaps; help connect young people to careers; help educational and training institutions align curriculum with industry demand; address recruiting and retention of workers and develop career ladders within and across companies; highlight best practices; and promote communications among companies.
