Rail Transportation in the Twin Cities

Railroads are an often overlooked subset of the transportation industry, but Minnesota has a strong rail transportation industry, particularly in the Twin Cities. More than 71 million tons of goods originate from Minnesota, carried by 21 railroads over 4,496 miles. This placed us sixth in the nation in 2004.1 Employment tops 5,160 railroad workers in Minnesota; the average salary for these workers, not including benefits, was $65,300 in 2004.2
The rail transportation industry, like many others, is facing an aging workforce. Nationally the median age for railroad workers in 2004 was 47 years.3 This is almost seven years older than the median age of the U.S. labor force.4 Almost a quarter of all railroad workers were 55 or older in 2004, a statistical fact that will force the industry to deal with replacing retiring workers in the coming decade. The new workers will need higher levels of technological skills and knowledge than their predecessors as the railroad industry changes to meet the demands of a 21st-century economy.

Business Logistics Management

Raw materials that trains move every day need to be processed, and goods need to be stored and transported across the entire supply chain, making logistics an integral component of the entire transportation industry sector. Saint Paul College offers a certificate and AAS degree in business logistics management where students learn about the modern supply chain, distribution planning, purchasing, planning, and business negotiating.
